Raine: It’s been another exciting day… first a drive out of town which in itself was interesting to see how people live away from the city centre. The houses are all different shapes, made of a range of materials and in differing states or build and repair. Then a two hour drive along a stony road to reach the black glacier Ventisquero Negro, so called because it collects a lot of dirt and rocks before it settles at the lake head. It’s a most dramatic sight. Also we witnessed tremendous ice falls from the high glacier and after a few seconds the sound of it just like thunder echoing around the peaks. We were surrounded by peaks streaming with waterfalls. We walked to get a better view of the waterfall and then sat by the broad river in the sunshine. We met some lads who were also travelling through Patagonia and chatted to them for a while and gave them a lift to the next trail head. It seems we have a passenger for our journey to El Bolsón tomorrow as one of the lads is going that way too. He’s promised to teach me some Spanish on the journey!

The banks along the road are full of flowers, daisies, marigolds, alstroemeria, vetch, clematis and many others …truly beautiful.

The scenery was stunning

Wild lupine

Snowy mountains

Glaciers - Ventisquero Negro. The glacier at the top breaks away and combines with rocks etc and forms the black glacier at the bottom

Waterfalls

Relaxing

The road was stone and winding. Maximum speed 30km/h

One of the better bridges

Posing

Auditioning for an outdoor clothing company

The outskirts of Bariloche were a sort of shantytown. Probably a bit better than that but still fairly ramshackle

Still lots of old beaten up cars on the road. Did this pass an MOT?
