We took a trip to the south of El Bolson today to see the cabin where Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid hid out for years. There was a museum dedicated to their escapades in a building that was the general store from the late 1800s until 1970. It was called La Legal. The two women in the museum were interesting to talk to and knew lots about the history of the area. We had a coffee and a typical Argentine cake … delicious. We arrived early and parked down a track…it was one of those places that just touches your soul. The early light after the night’s rain, the flowers and grasses, the sound of the bees on the thistles and the scent of the earth warming up was a magical combination.

On our way back we stopped for a picnic and a hike at Lake Epuyen … great views. On the way we were pulled over by the police who asked to see our papers and where we were going…usually we get waved through. Everything was in order and they proceeded to direct us to the lake. I did make a quick voice note in case we were in trouble and never to be seen again… it’s hilarious but sadly I cannot upload it!

This afternoon we drove up a steep and windy gravel road for 6km then hiked up a mountain for 1km to visit a sculpture park. The sculptures were done in response to a devastating forest fire and were made from the remains of the trees. Again the views were spectacular as we climbed higher and the drops off the tracks were perilous. My toes ache from gripping. Still it’s all good practise for the Inca Trail next month.

Saw a field of beautiful thistles

Beautiful flowers everywhere

It was windy!

Despite last night’s rain the fire danger is still extreme

That’s El Bolson down there

Great views of El Bolson

The track was a bit rough and steep

A real outlaw!
